Unlike many sports, baseball fields are not of a uniform size. Or at least, parts of them are not. Some dimensions remain constant wherever you are. From home plate to first base, the distance is 90ft, and the pitcher’s mound is always 60ft and 6 inches from the batsman. Part of it is to do with history. Pre-war stadiums were built in a time when cities were less densely populated and before the rules had been fully codified. As things progressed and baseball began to create household names such as ‘Shoeless’ Joe Jackson and Ty Cobb, the New York Yankees rose to dominance thanks to another famous player. George Herman ‘Babe’ Ruth joined the team in 1919 and two years later, they were in the World Series. For the next 45 years, the Yankees were almost a permanent fixture at the Series, appearing in 29 finals, and winning 20 of them. From 1936-39, they won the Series 4 times in a row, and from 1949-53, they won five in a row.

Since 2000, no team has won consecutive World Series, the longest period the game has gone without consecutive winners.
