History of the Game

The origins of the game are believed to have come from Northern France. In the 12th century, the game was played without rackets. It was called “jue de paume” which translates literally as “game of the palm”. The name of the game as we now know it comes from “tenez” which can mean “hold”, “receive” or “take” (and therefore fitting neatly in with modern tennis’s curious terminology) and it is generally assumed that this is what the server would call out to prepare his opponent shortly before the ball came his way.
